Active Shooter: Active Assailant Response Plan

Description

The chilling reality of active assailant incidents demands our attention. While the subject itself is deeply unsettling, avoiding it only reduces our ability to respond effectively if the unthinkable occurs. This course confronts that discomfort directly—not to instill fear, but to empower you with the knowledge, awareness, and practical actions that can save lives when every second matters. The landscape of personal and public safety has evolved; what was once considered a rare and isolated event now requires understanding and preparedness. By moving beyond the mindset of “it won’t happen here” and toward “what if it did, and what would I do,” we replace fear with resilience and readiness.

The course begins with a critical shift in perspective: moving from a passive bystander to an empowered survivor. Just as organizations prepare for fires, medical emergencies, or natural disasters, an active assailant event demands the same level of thoughtful preparation. This starts with cultivating heightened situational awareness—an ongoing awareness of your surroundings, including exits, potential hiding locations, and changes in behavior or environment that may signal danger. Participants are encouraged to think proactively, mentally mapping escape routes and identifying areas of safety wherever they go. These mental preparations form a vital foundation when stress levels surge and decision-making becomes more difficult.

A key component of this training is understanding and applying the widely accepted Run, Hide, Fight framework. Rather than a rigid checklist, this framework is presented as a flexible, situational set of principles designed to help individuals make the best possible decisions in rapidly changing circumstances. “Run” is always emphasized as the preferred option when a safe escape path is available. Participants learn how to evacuate effectively, move with purpose, avoid predictable patterns, and prioritize personal safety over possessions. Guidance is also provided on what to do once you reach safety, including contacting emergency services and sharing critical information.

When escape is not possible, the course explores the “Hide” principle in depth. This includes identifying locations that provide both concealment and cover, securing doors, barricading entrances, silencing devices, and remaining out of sight. Participants learn how to maximize their chances of remaining undetected while preparing mentally for the next steps. Finally, “Fight” is addressed as a last-resort option when an individual faces immediate danger and no other alternatives exist. The course discusses the realities of this decision, emphasizing decisive action, improvised defensive tools, and the goal of creating an opportunity to escape or survive.

Beyond the immediate response, the course covers what happens after law enforcement arrives. Understanding how first responders operate is essential for personal safety and effective resolution of the situation. Participants will learn how to cooperate with responding officers, keep their hands visible, follow instructions, and provide clear, concise information when requested. These actions can prevent confusion and support a faster, safer response.

The training also acknowledges the lasting psychological impact of active assailant incidents. Surviving such an event does not end when the immediate danger passes. Participants are introduced to the emotional and psychological responses that may follow, including shock, anxiety, and stress reactions. The course emphasizes that these responses are normal and encourages seeking support through trusted individuals, organizational resources, or mental health professionals. It also highlights the importance of community and workplace resilience, reinforcing the value of open communication, mutual support, and collective recovery.

This course is essential for individuals, employees, and community members who want to replace uncertainty with preparedness. By combining practical strategies, mental readiness, and compassionate awareness, the training equips participants with the tools needed to respond decisively and responsibly during an active assailant event—turning knowledge into life-saving readiness.
